Imperious Class and Devastating Turn

An in-depth close up look at the inthrawling affair between Kent and Derbyshire.

Day One:

Day one of this match in Deby saw Kent bat first and on a very tricky wicket mustered up a hard fought 285. Innings of note were a 53 (101) from Zak Crawely, a thundering 69 (95) provided by Daniel Bell-Drummond and a well fought classy knock from Jack Leaning who notched 82 (167) and finished not out. From a Derbyshire point of view this would have been seen as a succesful day, an accompilished 4-82 from Ben Atchinson, starting on top and claiming wickets quickly through the tail would have posted them with huge confidence going in to their first innings. However by the time they ended day one they found themselves 29-3 (13.1) having lost two wickets in the second over too the skillful bowling of Grant Stewert. A horrid end to a succesful day for Derby.

Day Two:

Day two continued on in the same vein as day one had ended unfortunately for Derbyshire. Grant Stewert bowled a consistantly devestating spell, constantly on point and deadly with his awkward but potent movement. His deserving five-er pushed Kent into the driving seat and despite knocks like 27 (27) from Matt Critchley and 39 (28) by Sam Connors they were rolled for just 156, 129 runs short of Kent's first innings total. Kent still had 60 overs to bat on day two and made batting look considerably more comfortable then either of the first innings and were 211-2 at the close. So, from a Kent point of view a 5-23 from Grant Stewart and 3-64 from Nathan Gilchrist were huge positives for Kent, Derbyshire crumbled throughout their innings and allowed knocks like 68 (90) From Zak Crawely, 81 (138) from Jordan Cox and 51 (67) by Daniel Bell-Drummond meaning Kent were in a commanding position going into day three.

Day Three:

The wicket was fresh and Kent were going in for the Kill however day three was a complete wash out. The only thing of note was Kent declaring with a 340 run lead.

Day Four:

Day four was neately poised and started extremely well for Kent who once again struck early, same culpuirt Grant Stewart this time in the eighth over and dismissing Leus De Ploy for a pair with a first baller. Despute valliant efforts from Anuj Dal and Ben Aitchinson who scored 58 and 36 respectively, Derbyshire crumbled and from a moment of serenity on day two when batting for Kent looked simple and once again the wicket appeared slow, grassy and equally turny and Derbyshire were bowled out for 210 and lost by 120 runs.

Grant Stewart and Harry Podmore shared 2 wicket halls but were shadowed by an devastating spell from Nathan Gilchrist who took four in the comfortable win.

Thoughts?...

General thoughts after this game are clinical and ruthlessness by Kent, Crumbly and inconsistent Derbyshire, notable match performances from Daniel Bell-Drummond, Zak Crawely, Grant Stewart and Nathan Gilchrist. Ben Aitchinson impressed on day one but struggled as the match progressed and Leus De Ploy's dismal return too red ball contineud with a nasty pair.
