Central Districts vs Wellington

A MatchPack looking ahead to todays clash between Central Districts and Wellington

Its 10:30 am in Wellington, over across the pond (well it's more like an ocean) in Ireland it is 9:30 pm the night before. Ollie Newton runs into the crease jumps and bowls, but lets back track shall we?...

WE back track to a week ago to see a deflated Ollie Newton getting out sealing victory for Canterbury. Each sides third game of the season was a top of the table clash, Canterbury in first with Wellington in second. The Firebirds were eyeing up a chance to take top spot with a victory but early on in the match batting seemed easy with Canterbury 81-0. However, in an extreme turn of events all hell broke loose seeing 18 wickets fall for just 150 runs and ending the day with Wellington 101-8. The Firebirds struggled to really manage to gain a firm grip on the game on preceding's and with Canterbury notching up a second innings total of 400 they seemed out of it. Indeed they were succumbing to a 300 run loss following being bowled out once again for a little over 100 and slumped from second to fourth in the league. So, what do we know about their upcoming competitors?

Well, a decent side whos most recent shield win is still visible down the road. Central Districts are a power house to be reckoned with. An elite number of New Zealand internationals and seasoned first class cricket pros they combine a side which will trouble the best. However, some of their most recent stars are currently in Abu Dhabi digesting a world cup final loss, another bogey is that they haven't played a game for nine months. They are yet to play this season with their last game of the Plunket shield 2020/21 the most recent form you can trace them too, it ended in a loss. So a definite big team with plenty of experience who could go far in the competition. However, with no games for nearly a year combined with their competitors going onto their fourth game of their competition I am predicting a Wellington win by 6 wickets.

But, back to that Newton ball, with the scores level, ink fresh, boots tightened and fans waiting anything could happen. Ah! the beauty of cricket!
